It's important for parents and caregivers to take proactive steps to create a safe environment for children to prevent tragic accidents from happening.

One of the main causes of accidental child fatalities is drowning. Children can drown in as little as one inch of water so it's important to supervise them closely when they are near water. It's important to keep cribs free of any loose bedding or soft items. Use sleep sacks instead of blankets or sheets. Keep cords and wires safely out of reach of young children.

Install gates at the top and bottom of stairways and put window guards on all windows above ground level. Teach your children not to climb on furniture or play near windows.

Burns and scalds can happen quickly and can be extremely painful. Hot liquids and hot surfaces are the leading causes of burns in children. Always supervise children when they are near hot surfaces or cooking areas. Keep all hot liquids out of reach of small children. Set your water heater to 120 degrees Fahrenheit to prevent scalds.

Poisoning is another significant risk for young children. Keep all medication cleaning products and chemicals out of reach of children. Install childproof locks on cabinets and drawers containing hazardous materials. Teach your children not to put anything in their mouth that they find on the floor or in the yard.

Finally it's important to teach children how to call for help in an emergency. Post important phone numbers near all phones in the house. Teach your children when and how to call 911. It's also important to have a first aid kit and basic medical supplies on hand in case of an emergency.
