South Korea's consumer inflation dropped to a 21-month low in October as the prices of agricultural and petroleum products fell. The country's consumer price index (CPI) rose by 1% in October compared to the previous year slowing down from the 1.5% increase in September. This marks the slowest pace of inflation since January 2020.
According to data from the Korea National Statistical Office the drop in consumer inflation can be mainly attributed to lower prices of agricultural products including vegetables fruits and seafood. Additionally the prices of petroleum-related goods such as gasoline and diesel declined in October.
The decline in agricultural product prices can be attributed to favorable weather conditions which led to increased supply and lower demand. In particular vegetable prices dropped by 11.2% in October compared to the previous year while prices of fruits and seafood decreased by 7.3% and 12.2% respectively.
The decrease in petroleum product prices is largely due to the decline in global crude oil prices. The ongoing concerns over rising COVID-19 cases particularly in Europe and Asia have raised fears of reduced oil demand leading to a decrease in oil prices. Gasoline prices fell by 6.2% in October compared to the previous year and diesel prices decreased by 6.1%.
The South Korean government has been implementing various measures to stabilize consumer prices and support economic recovery. These measures include providing subsidies for agricultural products to stabilize prices as well as reducing taxes on petroleum products to ease the burden on consumers. However the impact of these measures on inflation is yet to be fully realized.
Despite the decline in consumer inflation the South Korean economy has been showing signs of recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. The country's GDP grew by 0.7% in the third quarter of 2021 driven by increased private consumption and exports. The government has also been focusing on boosting domestic demand through stimulus measures and promoting investments in key industries.
