US Department of Commerce reviews impact of RISC-V processor architecture on Chinas chip development
The U.S. Department of Commerce is considering complicating Chinas use of the RISC-V processor architecture, which has a free license allowing developers worldwide, including those in China and Russia, to access it for free. The U.S. fears that restricting chip sales to China wont work if China can create its own chips using RISC-V. Despite this, China is already using RISC-V for chip development, including processors for desktop PCs and servers. The CEO of RISC-V International defends open-source code, stating it promotes technology development and leads to useful innovations.
