Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a life-threatening genetic disorder that affects the lungs and digestive system. However a recent study has shown promising results with a triple combination therapy bringing hope to CF patients around the world.
The study led by a team of researchers from the University of Medical Sciences involved 200 CF patients aged between 18 and 45. The participants were divided into two groups with one group receiving the triple combination therapy and the other receiving a placebo.
The triple combination therapy consisted of three medications: Lumacaftor Tezacaftor and Ivacaftor. Lumacaftor and Tezacaftor work by correcting the function of the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) protein while Ivacaftor improves the protein's activity.
After six months of treatment the researchers observed significant improvements in lung function as measured by forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1). The group receiving the triple combination therapy showed an average increase of 10% compared to the placebo group.
In addition to improved lung function the triple combination therapy also resulted in fewer pulmonary exacerbations and decreased hospitalizations. Patients reported experiencing fewer respiratory symptoms and improved quality of life.
