In the summer of 2020 protests erupted in the city of Khabarovsk in Russia's far east. The spontaneous mass demonstrations were initially triggered by the arrest of a popular regional governor Sergei Furgal on charges of involvement in multiple murders that had occurred years earlier. However the protests quickly evolved into a broader movement against the central Russian government and its perceived disregard for the interests of the people in the region.
Sergei Furgal had won the governorship of the Khabarovsk region in 2018 defeating the candidate from Vladimir Putin's United Russia party. His unexpected victory was attributed to widespread discontent over corruption and economic stagnation in the region. Furgal a member of the nationalist Liberal Democratic Party promised to fight against the entrenched political elites and improve the lives of ordinary citizens.
The news of Furgal's arrest on July 9 2020 shocked the residents of Khabarovsk and ignited a wave of outrage. Tens of thousands of people took to the streets demanding his release and calling for an end to Moscow's perceived interference in regional politics. The protests continued for several months with demonstrators braving harsh weather conditions and the threat of arrests.
The Russian government however dismissed the protests as insignificant and claimed that they were orchestrated by outside forces seeking to destabilize the country. State-controlled media outlets largely ignored the demonstrations while pro-Kremlin commentators portrayed the protesters as misguided and manipulated by Western powers. The authorities also deployed a heavy police presence in Khabarovsk arresting prominent activists and tightening restrictions on public gatherings.
Despite the government's efforts to suppress the protests the movement in Khabarovsk garnered significant support both within and outside Russia. Solidarity rallies were held in other cities across the country and international media outlets covered the events extensively. The protests in Khabarovsk highlighted the deepening divide between the Kremlin and the regions with many Russians expressing frustration over the perceived centralization of power and the erosion of local autonomy.
One key figure who emerged during the protests was Igor Strelkov a former Russian military officer and veteran of the conflicts in Eastern Ukraine. Strelkov who had previously gained notoriety for his role in the annexation of Crimea openly supported the demonstrators in Khabarovsk calling for greater regional autonomy and denouncing the central government's oppressive tactics. His involvement brought further attention to the movement and heightened concerns within the Russian establishment.
The protests eventually subsided but the underlying issues that fueled the discontent in Khabarovsk remain unresolved. The arrest of Sergei Furgal and the subsequent demonstrations exposed the deep-rooted grievances of many Russians outside Moscow and St. Petersburg.
